India Post: The Indian Postal Department has recently introduced significant changes to the rules and pricing of its Speed Post services in preparation for the festive season, particularly Raksha Bandhan, to benefit its vast customer base. The department has clearly defined the distinction between ‘documents’ and ‘parcels’, along with announcing a new tariff structure for the Speed Post services.
It is essential for regular senders of letters, official documents, and other postal items to familiarize themselves with these updated regulations before making any bookings. Here is an overview of the information provided by India Post:

The Department of Posts has for the first time outlined the definition of a document, which includes letters, printed materials, and non-resalable additional items. These items will be subject to a lower postage rate, while all other items will be classified as parcels. The department has also disclosed the rates for 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post services for both individual and bulk customers, ensuring delivery within the specified timeframes.

Items classified as documents
– Items related to the banking, financial services, and insurance sector such as welcome kits, bank documents, plastic cards, and government-issued documents like PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, and passports will be considered documents.
– Non-commercial packages weighing up to 500 grams, like Rakhi envelopes, packets, and greeting cards, will also fall under the document category.
Changes in fees
While there are no alterations in the rates for individual customers, new rates have been introduced for bulk bookings in the document category. Effective August 1, charges for retail customers for 24-hour Speed Post will vary from Rs 38 to Rs 186 per packet based on weight and distance. Charges for packets under 50 grams will be Rs 38 locally and Rs 94 nationwide (excluding GST). Postal charges for packets weighing 51-250 grams will range from Rs 118-154, and for 251-500 grams, it will be between Rs 140-186 per packet. Bulk customers will be charged between Rs 38 to Rs 100 for 24-hour Speed Post and Rs 48 to Rs 72 for 48-hour service.
India Post’s objective behind these updates is to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and modernization of the Speed Post service. It is crucial to correctly classify your mail as a document or parcel to ensure timely and uninterrupted delivery.
