Over the next three to four days, weather patterns are expected to undergo a significant shift, raising the possibility of storms and squalls in several states. Furthermore, the El Niño phenomenon is likely to weaken the Southwest Monsoon in India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the likelihood of rainfall in various states.

Know the Weather Forecast

According to the IMD, pre-monsoon activities are expected to continue across the country for the next 3 to 4 days. Consequently, temperatures in the Pacific Ocean remain slightly above normal levels. This also explains why, following a spell of intense heat, sudden bouts of rain and storms are now being witnessed. Moreover, this influence is expected to subsequently weaken the Southwest Monsoon.

How Long Will the Pre-Monsoon Phase Last?

According to the Meteorological Department, the pre-monsoon phase in North and Central India typically occurs between March and June. During this period, there is a possibility of conditions such as ‘heat domes’ developing. However, intermittent rainfall is also expected to provide some relief. Current forecasts suggest that the pre-monsoon phase is likely to become fully active by the end of May. Indications suggest that the monsoon is likely to arrive in the Andaman Sea between May 18 and May 20.

Possibility of Heatwaves

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding the likelihood of heatwaves sweeping across Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and Telangana. Additionally, hot and humid weather conditions are expected to persist until May 2 in several parts of Tamil Nadu, as well as in regions such as Saurashtra and Kutch. Residents in various areas of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh may also experience discomfort due to warm nights.

Rainfall Warning for Northeast and East India

According to the IMD, a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland, spanning a period of five days. Additionally, an alert for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms has been issued for Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Several locations in these regions may witness spells of intense rainfall. Light rain and strong winds are also expected to be experienced across the eastern Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
