India slams Yunus government over deaths of Hindu youths in Bangladesh

New Delhi: The situation remains dire in neighbouring Bangladesh, where members of the Hindu community are being targeted. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made a significant statement on Friday, expressing concern over the violence against minorities in Bangladesh and condemning the killing of Dipu Das. He added that India expects the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Violence cannot be completely ignored

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that “during the tenure of the current interim government of Bangladesh, 2900 incidents have been reported, including murders, arson, and land grabbing. These reports cannot be dismissed as mere political violence.” General elections are scheduled to be held in Bangladesh in February 2025.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has become active in the run-up to the elections and is actively campaigning for votes. In this context, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP and son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has returned to Dhaka after 17 years. A leading contender for the post of Prime Minister, Rahman symbolically marked his return to Bangladeshi politics by standing barefoot on Bangladeshi soil immediately after arriving at the airport.

What did the Ministry of External Affairs say about the Bangladesh elections?

Regarding Tarique Rahman’s return after 17 years and the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said that India believes there should be free, fair, and inclusive elections in Bangladesh. India is also committed to maintaining good relations with the citizens of Bangladesh. He added that India hopes for peace and stability there, and that all parties participate and the voices of the people are heard.
