On Saturday afternoon, a strong earthquake struck near the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Its intensity was measured at 5.8 on the Richter scale. The tremors of this earthquake shook the earth in many areas of North India, including our Kashmir and Delhi-NCR.
At around 12:17 p.m., people in the Kashmir Valley and the Delhi-NCR region experienced mild to moderate tremors. The sudden shaking of the earth spread fear and panic among the people.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 86 kilometres below the ground. Its main centre was the border area of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Please note that this area is already considered sensitive to earthquakes.
Panic in Kashmir
When the tremors were felt in the Kashmir Valley, people quickly emerged from their homes and offices. A video of Srinagar has also gone viral, in which people are seen running quickly from a building. Many people in Delhi-NCR also reported feeling the tremors and shared their experiences on social media.
No damage, everything is fine!
The good news is that there is no news of anyone dying or any kind of damage so far. The government has said that they are monitoring the situation and rescue teams have been alerted. Experts also believe that an earthquake at such a depth has less risk of causing major damage.
Why do so many earthquakes occur here?
The area bordering Afghanistan and Tajikistan is the place where the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates collide. This is why this area is very active in terms of earthquakes. Earthquakes occur here often. In the last few years too, many big tremors have been felt in this area.
