Driving License Online in India

Driving License Online in India: Driving a vehicle on Indian roads without a valid driving license can result in heavy fines and, in severe cases, even imprisonment. This is why having a driver’s license is not only essential but also legally mandatory. The good news is that the process has now become much simpler. Under the government’s digital initiatives, citizens in India can apply for a driving license online without standing in long queues or making repeated visits to the RTO.

From the application to the learner’s license test, most steps can now be completed online from the comfort of your home.

Two-Step Process to Get a Driving License in India

In India, a driving license is issued in two stages. The first stage is the Learner Driving License, which allows a person to learn to drive legally. After a fixed period, the applicant becomes eligible to apply for a Permanent Driving License by passing a driving test at the RTO.

How to Apply for a Learner Driving License Online?

To begin the application, applicants must visit the official website at parivahan.gov.in. From there, they must select the online services section and proceed to the Sarathi portal, which handles all driving license–related services.

After selecting the state, applicants should click Apply for Learner License and select the Aadhaar-based application option. Aadhaar number or Virtual ID must be entered, followed by OTP verification sent to the registered mobile number.

Once verified, applicants must provide personal details such as name, address, and date of birth. After completing the form, the required documents—including proof of identity, address, and age—must be uploaded. The final step is to pay the prescribed fee and securely save the application number for future use.

How to Appear for the Online Learner License Test?

After applying, applicants must appear for the online learner’s license test. This can be done by logging in to the Sarathi portal and selecting the online test option. The application number and captcha code are required to access the test.

The test checks basic traffic rules, road signs, and driving safety awareness. If the applicant passes the test, the Learner License is issued online. In some states, a printed copy of the license is also delivered to the applicant’s home address.

What Happens After Getting the learner’s License?

Once the learner’s license is issued, the applicant is legally allowed to practice driving under the rules prescribed by law. After completing the mandatory learning period, the applicant must visit the nearest RTO to appear for the driving test.

On the test day, all original documents and the fee receipt must be carried. If the applicant successfully clears the driving test, the Permanent Driving License is approved and sent to the registered address.

Why is the Online License Application a Big Relief?

The online system has reduced paperwork, waiting time, and unnecessary visits to RTO offices. It has made the process more transparent, faster, and accessible for people across the country.
