HRA Update: Big news for central government employees. There is a new update regarding HRA, which should you know about it. If you are employed by the central government, this information might be of interest to you. The central government has released a new update concerning House Rent Allowance (HRA).

It has been clarified that if a married couple, both working as central government employees and stationed at the same place, and only one of them is provided government housing, they will not be eligible to receive HRA. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary provided this clarification in response to a query in the Rajya Sabha.

The query posed was by Rajya Sabha MP Sumitra Balmik. She inquired in writing why HRA is deducted from the salaries of both husband and wife when they are government employees and reside together in government-provided housing. She also questioned if the government had been approached by employees or their unions to reconsider this policy.
MP Sumitra Balmik further inquired whether the government intends to review this policy to make it fairer for couples where both are government employees. Minister Pankaj Chaudhary addressed all these queries in his written responses.
Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, clarified that HRA is granted to central government employees who do not have access to government housing to assist them in renting a home. He elaborated that if a married couple are both government employees stationed at the same location, and one of them is provided with government housing, the family is deemed to have government accommodation, and thus the other spouse is not eligible for HRA.
Central government employees are anticipating a Dearness Allowance (DA) raise for the July-December period. Speculations suggest a potential 3-4 percent hike in DA, which would increase it to 63-64 percent for central government employees. The announcement for the DA increase might be made by the government in September or October.
