Health Insurance: Big news for common people. The rising costs of medical treatment have become a significant issue for middle-class families today. A sudden hospitalization bill amounting to lakhs of rupees can throw any middle-class family’s budget into disarray. To address this concern, a parliamentary committee has suggested promoting affordable and accessible health insurance options for the middle class. Additionally, it has proposed several key recommendations regarding treatment costs in private hospitals. The committee advocates for clear and fixed rates for treatment packages, ensuring that patients are aware of the costs before commencing treatment.

Affordable health insurance for the middle class

A parliamentary committee has recommended promoting affordable, user-friendly health insurance schemes, such as “Arogya Sanjivani,” specifically for the middle class. The committee highlights that a significant portion of the middle class is not covered by government health plans, resulting in substantial out-of-pocket expenses during illnesses or medical emergencies.

The committee has urged the expansion of health insurance products that feature straightforward policy terms, allowing more individuals to benefit from them.

Fixed treatment rates in private hospitals

The committee has also provided crucial recommendations concerning treatment costs in private hospitals. It suggests establishing transparent and standardized treatment packages for all healthcare providers. This initiative aims to lower treatment costs and eliminate arbitrary charges. In particular, it calls for the removal of billing models based on room rent, which tend to inflate the overall treatment expenses. Furthermore, the committee has proposed the creation of a statutory framework to prevent arbitrary variations in treatment prices for standard procedures in private hospitals.

Ayushman Bharat package rates change from time to time

The parliamentary committee has also made recommendations regarding the package rates of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). These rates should be reviewed periodically, given inflation and the rising cost of new technologies used in treatment. The committee recommends creating a statutory framework for this, taking into account the economic conditions of different regions. This will ensure continued participation of private hospitals in the scheme and ensure that treatment quality is not compromised.

Medical expenses are constantly increasing

The parliamentary committee also expressed concern over the rising cost of private healthcare. According to the report, the average out-of-pocket cost of a hospitalization is Rs 34,064. Meanwhile, medical inflation is estimated at around 10-13% annually. This means that the cost of treatment is rising every year, directly impacting the pockets of ordinary families. The committee also said that the benefits of government health insurance schemes should not be affected by medical inflation and the rising cost of technology used in treatment.
