GOBARdhan Scheme: Big news for everyone. If someone mentioned that the waste and refuse from your home or village could make you a millionaire, you might chuckle. But hold on. For many years, dung has served as fertilizer for our crops, as well as paint and fuel. Now, this very dung and garbage is poised to generate significant income for you. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made a decision that will revolutionize the energy sector and your economy.

The government has launched the Gobardhan Yojana with an impressive budget of Rs 23,731 crore. The best part is that you won’t have to worry about selling the gas you produce; the government will purchase it directly from you. This means the government is set to transform waste into wealth.

What is the government’s grand strategy?

In our nation, agricultural waste like stubble, cow and buffalo dung, along with urban organic waste, is frequently discarded or incinerated, leading to pollution. With the Gobardhan Yojana, the government has crafted a comprehensive plan to convert this waste into compressed biogas (CBG), a clean energy source. This initiative is set to run for a full decade.

Aiming for a tenfold increase in production

The government’s objective is to boost India’s CBG production tenfold. Farmers and villagers will not only cultivate food but will also become key contributors to the nation’s energy security. The biggest fear in starting any new business is that we will produce the goods, but who will buy them? This is the biggest Brahmastra of the Gobardhan Yojana. The government has made a rule of purchase guarantee. City gas distribution companies will have to buy your gas. This means that the same companies which supply CNG at petrol pumps and PNG to homes will buy your gas. Targets have been fixed for these companies. In 2026-27, it will be mandatory to buy 3% of the total gas, next year 4% and from 2028-29, 5% gas will have to be purchased from these indigenous CBG plant owners.

Whether you’re a farmer or a trader, the anxiety of market fluctuations can be overwhelming, especially when prices soar today but plummet tomorrow. Thankfully, the government has introduced a lasting solution to this dilemma. Through the Gobardhan Yojana, a fixed government rate for CBDG has been set at Rs 2,110 per MMBTU. This rate is not temporary; it will remain unchanged for a minimum of 10 years, allowing you to anticipate your earnings over the next decade.

To assist in establishing a factory, the government is offering substantial financial support worth crores. Setting up a multi-million dollar facility is no small feat, which is why the government is stepping in with financial aid. Whether you’re launching a new CBD plant or expanding an existing one, you can receive capital assistance. The government will provide direct financial support of up to Rs 2 crore per ton per day, depending on your plant’s capacity. This funding can be used not only for machinery purchases but also for waste collection systems and composting, making it easier for MSMEs, small rural entrepreneurs, and village committees to establish their own plants.

Additionally, the government covers the costs associated with loan guarantees and pipeline installation. While gas production is underway, the challenge remains: how will it be delivered to the city? Transporting gas via trucks can be costly. The government is fully backing the installation of a new pipeline from your gas plant to the city’s main gas pipeline. Once this connection is made, your gas will be delivered directly to customers in the market.

When seeking a loan from a bank, a guarantee is typically required. Under this initiative, the government assures banks, “Provide them with the loan, and we will cover the risk.” With this backing, loans will be more accessible and affordable.

When the gas is extracted from waste and dung, the thick liquid or dry matter left behind at the plant is the world’s finest organic fertilizer. The plant owner will not only earn money by selling the gas at the government rate, but will also reap double the profits by selling the remaining premium organic fertilizer to farmers. This fertilizer revitalizes the soil in the fields.
