Free LPG: Good news for common people. In a fresh development in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and public welfare initiatives, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay revealed a significant election promise and relief package during the Assembly session. To alleviate the burden of inflation on everyday families and housewives, the state government has made a noteworthy decision to offer three LPG cylinders annually at no cost. A key aspect of this initiative is that eligible recipients will not need to wait in lines; rather, the full subsidy for the three cylinders will be directly credited to their bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Moreover, Chief Minister Vijay introduced the “Vettri Payanam” scheme, which broadens the existing free bus travel program to enhance public transportation options for women. This new initiative will extend the availability of free travel on government buses to millions of women throughout the state. By unveiling these significant welfare initiatives in the Assembly, the government has clearly demonstrated its commitment to empowering women at the grassroots level and supporting family budgets.

1.30 crore families benefited

Under the scheme, the government will transfer the amount spent on purchasing cylinders directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. Approximately 13 million families are estimated to benefit from this scheme. According to reports, the Vijay government will spend approximately Rs 4,000 crore annually on this scheme. Chief Minister Vijay stated in the Assembly that the war situation in the Gulf region and the rising prices of gas cylinders have increased the financial burden on the people. In such a situation, the government is fulfilling its promise to the public by providing this relief.

Vijay stated, “The conflict situation in the Gulf region, along with the increasing costs of LPG cylinders, has created an extra financial strain on the public. With this in mind, the government has chosen to cover the expenses of LPG cylinders, despite the financial hurdles, to alleviate the burden on citizens, safeguard their welfare, and honor the commitment made to the people.”

Gifts for women and transgenders

The Vijaya government has broadened the “Vettri Payanam” initiative for women. Women will now enjoy free travel not just on regular buses, but also on express, LSS, deluxe, and inter-district government buses. Transgender individuals will also be able to take advantage of this program.

Vijay announced that the scheme will commence on October 2. In his speech, CM Vijaya remarked, “The ability for women to travel freely is essential for their economic independence and the advancement of their families. No woman in Tamil Nadu should miss out on opportunities simply due to travel costs.”
