FD: Fixed deposits (FDs) are widely regarded as a secure investment option that provides steady returns, particularly favored by senior citizens. Even during market fluctuations, FDs guarantee a stable income for investors. Typically, the interest rates on FDs or recurring deposits are higher than those on savings accounts, making it a prudent decision to deposit a lump sum with a financial institution at a fixed interest rate for a specific period.
In June 2026, most public, private, and small finance banks are offering senior citizens an additional 0.50 percent or more interest on fixed deposits compared to regular customers. Some banks are even providing returns of up to 8 percent on medium- and long-term deposit schemes to senior citizens. Furthermore, certain banks are extending extra benefits to super senior citizens aged 80 or above.
Senior citizens are generally offered slightly higher interest rates across all deposit durations compared to regular investors. They also have the option to save on taxes by investing in tax-saving FDs. For instance, under Section 80TTB of the Income Tax Act, senior citizens can claim a deduction for a five-year tax-saver FD with a principal amount of up to Rs 1.5 lakh and interest up to Rs 50,000 when filing their tax returns.
When it comes to interest rates on FDs for senior citizens in June 2026, small finance banks are leading the way with attractive rates. Suryoday Small Finance Bank and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank are offering rates as high as 8.25%, while private sector banks like Yes Bank and IndusInd Bank are providing rates up to 7.75%. Among public sector banks, Canara Bank offers 7.29%, Union Bank 7.15%, Punjab National Bank 7.10% (7.40% for super senior citizens), and State Bank of India (SBI) 7.05% for 5- to 10-year tenures. Other banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Axis Bank offer rates ranging from 7% to 7.30%.

Financial experts recommend fixed deposits for risk-averse individuals seeking to safeguard their capital. These deposits serve as a dependable financial tool for managing medical expenses, daily needs, and unexpected financial crises during retirement. Investors have the flexibility to choose deposit durations ranging from 7 days to 10 years based on their specific requirements.
