FASTag Local Pass: Big news for FASTag users. To ease the challenges faced by residents near toll plazas, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a relief scheme. This initiative includes the launch of the online FASTag ‘local pass’ service at 121 toll plazas nationwide. The announcement was made on Tuesday (August 18). According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, eligible commuters can now apply for the monthly local pass online via the ‘RajamargYatra’ mobile app, eliminating the need for in-person visits to the toll plaza to submit necessary documents.

The Digital Local Pass feature was initially introduced in July 2026 at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza on the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi. This pass is available to residents living in close proximity. The goal of this initiative is to enhance transparency and efficiency in toll operations by utilizing technology to make travel on national highways more user-friendly and focused on citizens’ needs.

What are the requirements for obtaining a FASTag local pass?

Under the Digital Local Pass system, individuals residing within 20 kilometers of an eligible toll plaza can apply for a local pass through the “Rajamargyatra” mobile app. National Highway users can find a list of eligible toll plazas at https://rajmargyatra.nhai.gov.in/buy-fastag-local-pass.

The FASTag Local Pass permits eligible commuters to travel without limits through the respective toll plazas throughout the month, in accordance with the applicable rules. Previously, commuters who wanted local passes had to physically visit the toll plazas and provide documentation to verify their residential address (within a 20-km radius) and meet other eligibility criteria.

The Digital Local Pass feature employs consent-based integration with government digital platforms (like DigiLocker and VAHAN) to collect and verify crucial information such as the passenger’s residential address, vehicle details, and linked FASTag. Eligibility is also validated through GIS-based verification, which assesses whether the applicant’s registration is accurate.
