EPFO EDLI Scheme: Big news for Employees. If you are working under the EPFO and your PF contributions are being deducted, this information is crucial for you. Eligible EPFO members receive life insurance coverage through the Employee Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI) without needing to pay an additional premium. In the unfortunate event of an employee’s death while still employed, their nominee or legal heir can claim a maximum insurance amount of up to Rs 7 lakh under EDLI, according to the regulations.
How can you obtain EDLI insurance up to Rs 7 lakh?
The insurance amount under EDLI is calculated based on the employee’s average monthly salary for the 12 months leading up to their death. However, this calculation is capped at a maximum monthly salary of Rs 15,000.
The straightforward formula for EDLI is:
30 times the average monthly salary + Rs 2.5 lakh bonus
If an employee’s average monthly salary is Rs 15,000, then:
15,000 × 30 = Rs 4.5 lakh
Bonus = Rs 2.5 lakh
Total benefit = Rs 7 lakh
Dearness Allowance (DA) is also factored into the EDLI calculation when determining salary. Thus, the scheme guarantees a minimum benefit if the eligibility criteria are satisfied.
Who qualifies for the EDLI benefit?
If you are an eligible EPF member, you are automatically enrolled in EDLI. There is no need for you to pay a separate premium. The main aim of this scheme is to offer financial support to the family of an employee who passes away while in service. In some cases, coverage may continue even if you switch jobs, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements.
How can you claim EDLI funds?
To access the EDLI benefit, the nominee or legal heir must submit a claim using the appropriate form along with the required documents. Form 5-IF must be filled out for EDLI benefits.
- The form typically needs to be verified by the employer.
- If employer verification is not feasible, the form can be validated by the designated competent authority.
- The claim filled form and necessary documents will have to be submitted to the concerned EPFO office.
- Relevant forms can also be submitted for other benefits related to EPF and EPS as per eligibility.
