There’s big news for ‘Squid Game’ fans! Even though its final season premiered on Friday, it doesn’t seem like the story is going to end here. The show’s creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk recently hinted at the possibility of a spin-off series. Yes, you heard it right, the ‘Squid Game’ universe could get even bigger!
What is Dong-hyuk’s ‘same’ idea?
In an interview with ‘Entertainment Weekly’, Dong-hyuk talked about an incomplete idea running in his mind. This idea is based on the three-year gap between Season 1 and 2. Remember when Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) was wandering around looking for recruiters? Dong-hyuk is thinking about that time.
He said, “That’s a three-year gap and maybe I can depict what the recruiters, or Captain Park (Oh Dal-soo), or the officers, or the masked men were doing during that time. Not inside the gaming arena, but what their lives were like outside of it. So this is a vague idea that’s in my mind and can be developed in the future.”
It will be a spin-off, not a sequel!
Dong-hyuk also made it clear in the same interview that this potential spin-off will not be a sequel to the show and Season 3 is actually the finale. He said, “You’ll feel it when you watch it. But I’m not trying to say that I’m completely closing the doors for a spin-off or a sequel because they say never say never.”
That is, even though the main story of ‘Squid Game’ has reached its climax, there is still a chance to explore the world behind it. This will be a great way to keep the audience connected to this world, but in a different way.
The price of creativity: Dong-hyuk’s health is also in question
Making a great series like ‘Squid Game’ is no easy task, and it also affects the health of the creators. Dong-hyuk revealed that he had to get eight teeth removed in Season 1, and now he has two more teeth removed for Season 2 and 3 which he has not yet fixed.
He said, “The problem is that for Season 2 and Season 3, we had to shoot and write simultaneously. It was like we were making a season, and we tried our best to bring Season 3 as soon as possible. So the total volume was very high, and we had to shoot for almost a year, so it was very physically demanding.”
This clearly shows how much hard work went into making ‘Squid Game’, and why the idea of a spin-off might be a different route for them, perhaps a little less tiring!
