But for Netflix, he chose a King story that was long considered impossible to make into a film.

‘Gerald’s Game’: A successful cinematic adaptation of an impossible story

The story takes place in a very unique setting, where its main character is trapped in one place. It was a great opportunity to create psychological horror, which King’s novel excelled at. Flanagan took those concepts and somehow made them all successful for a cinematic adaptation.
