These festivals not only hold religious and cultural significance, but also offer long school holidays. Many people are confused about the date of Diwali. The final decision on school holidays in India rests with the state government education departments, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and private school management. Diwali, the festival of lights, lasts for five days, while Chhath Puja is a four-day festival. Holidays for Chhath Puja will not be available in all states. It is a major festival in Bihar and is also celebrated in some districts of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Diwali is the festival of lights. However, this celebration lasts not just one day but five days. This five-day festival begins with Dhanteras and continues until Bhai Dooj. Furthermore, Diwali, along with Lakshmi Puja, will be celebrated on Monday, October 20th. The new moon date will last until the evening of October 21st, but due to Lakshmi Pujan during the Pradosh period, Diwali will be celebrated on October 20th in most places. Therefore, October 20th will be the main holiday for Diwali. In some places, a holiday may also be declared on October 21st, depending on the rising date.

Where will Diwali holidays be observed?

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar generally observe holidays from October 20th to or around October 23rd, covering Govardhan Puja (October 22nd) and Bhai Dooj. These states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, also declare extended holidays around October 19th and 23rd for the festival of lights.

How many days will schools be closed for Chhath?
In Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, October 27th and 28th may be declared official holidays. Many schools will be closed for two to four days, from Nahay-Khaay (October 25th) to October 28th.
