CBSE Takes Historic Step. In a major shift in the field of education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that starting the upcoming academic year, students in Grade 3 will also be taught basics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT). An expert committee has been formed under the chairmanship of IIT Madras Professor Karthik Raman, which will develop a new curriculum in the coming months. This new AI curriculum will be implemented in CBSE schools across the country from the 2026-27 session.

In this rapidly changing digital age, Artificial Intelligence is making its way into every field, be it education, health, or everyday life. This move by the Board will enable students to pursue AI education at an early stage and easily pursue a career.

Historic Step towards AI Education

This initiative by the CBSE is considered a major step towards making children aware and capable of technology from an early age. The Ministry of Education has stated that this decision will promote understanding, reasoning, and creative thinking in students.

The board aims to empower students not only with technology but also understand the ethical use of AI and its application for the benefit of society.

Expert Committee to be formed under the leadership of IIT Madras

CBSE has formed a committee headed by Professor Karthik Raman of the Department of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras to develop an AI and Computational Thinking curriculum. This committee includes representatives from CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and several education experts from across the country.

In a meeting held on Wednesday, all stakeholders discussed the outline of the new curriculum, and it was decided that the course would be developed in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE 2023).

Education Secretary Explains the Need for AI

School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar said that Artificial Intelligence has become an integral part of life today, just like “The World Around Us.” Therefore, it is important to introduce children to it from an early age.

He said, “It is our responsibility to set minimum standards for education and continually modify them over time to meet the needs of students.”

According to Kumar, this curriculum will not only connect students to the world of technology but will also completely transform the way we learn, think, and teach.

Expanding existing AI education

Currently, AI is being taught as a skill subject in over 18,000 CBSE schools from grade 6 onwards. This includes a short 15-hour module. AI is being offered as an optional subject in grades 9 to 12.

This move will further expand the scope of AI education, allowing students to learn skills like digital thinking and data-driven decision-making from as early as grade 3.
