UPI Refund Process: Nowadays, everyone uses UPI for payments; it has become an essential part of daily life. If you also use UPI, this information could be very useful for you. While UPI makes sending money incredibly easy, sometimes a payment fails even though your bank account has already deducted the amount.
In such situations, people often worry that they might lose their money forever. If this has happened to you, there is no need to panic—just stay calm. Often, even if money is deducted, it is eventually returned. Let’s look at what you should do in such a situation.
Check your payment status as soon as possible.
If money has been deducted from your account, the first step is to check the transaction history in your UPI app. You will be able to see the status of your payment there. Sometimes, a payment may not be marked as “failed”, but its status remains unclear. If the recipient has not received the funds, you can file a complaint or take further action after verifying the current status of the transaction.
Wait for the funds to be returned.
If a transaction fails but money has been deducted from your account, the bank often returns the amount automatically. In some cases, you may receive a refund on the same day, while in others, it might take longer. The timeframe for the refund depends on the nature of the transaction issue and the bank’s policies. During this period, avoid making another payment—especially if the status of the previous transaction is still showing as “pending.”

How to file a complaint via your UPI app
If the money is not returned within the expected timeframe, you can file a complaint directly through the UPI app you used. To do this, first open your UPI app. Then, locate the specific payment in your transaction history. Navigate to the ‘Help’, ‘Support’, or ‘Raise an Issue’ option. Select the nature of your problem and submit a complaint. You will receive a reference number for your complaint; be sure to keep it safe.
Contact your bank immediately.
If the issue cannot be resolved through the app, reach out to your bank’s customer care service or file a complaint at a bank branch. To lodge a complaint, you will need details such as the date and time of the transaction, the amount deducted, the UPI transaction ID or UTR number, the notification/message regarding the deduction from your bank account, and the payment status as displayed in the app. Providing this information helps the bank conduct an investigation more efficiently.
File a complaint with the RBI if the issue remains unresolved.
If you have already raised the issue with both the UPI app and your bank, but it remains unresolved, you can seek assistance through the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) complaint portal. The official portal is https://cms.rbi.org.in/.
