Delhi Buses:- Petrol and diesel prices in the country have been steadily rising. As of July 7, 2026, the price of petrol in Delhi is ₹102.12 per litre, and the price of diesel is ₹95.20 per litre. Now, buses in Delhi are set to run on ‘waste’ in the near future. Yes, you heard that right. Buses in Delhi will soon operate not on petrol, diesel, or CNG, but on hydrogen gas derived from waste. This was stated by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari himself.
On Monday, Gadkari said that in the future, Delhi’s buses could run on hydrogen fuel produced from municipal waste. He made this significant statement while addressing a youth conference organised by the Delhi BJP. He explained that future buses in Delhi could run on hydrogen produced from segregated municipal waste. The Union Minister envisioned a future in which hydrogen powers vehicles, with water utilised to produce it.
Is this really possible?
During his address, the Union Minister said, “People ask how this will happen. Has there ever been an instance in the last 50 years where a prediction of mine did not come true?”

The expressway was built using 8 million tonnes of waste
Gadkari revealed that approximately 8 million tonnes (80 lakh tonnes) of waste from Delhi’s landfill sites have already been used to construct expressways. He also outlined a plan to eliminate waste dumps across the country by the year 2027. He stated, “This [waste] will be segregated and used to produce hydrogen via bio-digesters. Buses in Delhi will run on this. All of this will be possible.”

Ride the Hydrogen Train for Just ₹5
Indian Railways is fully prepared to launch the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. This is being hailed as a major milestone for India’s Green Transport Mission and the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The Railways has kept the fare for this train quite low; for the service operating between Jind and Sonipat, fares will start at just ₹5 and go up to ₹25. The train will cover approximately 90 kilometres in just one hour—a journey that currently takes about two hours on a DEMU train.
