DA Hike: Central government employees are eagerly waiting for next DA hike. The dearness allowance (DA) for government employees may see a 3 percent rise starting from July 2026, potentially increasing from 60 percent to 63 percent. The decision on the exact raise will be made following the release of the June 2026 All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data.
How is the dearness allowance determined?
The calculation of DA for the period of July-December 2026 is based on the AICPI-IW data from July 2025 to June 2026. If the June 2026 index is approximately 151, the calculated DA is estimated to be around 63.7 percent, but as the government applies DA in full, it may round down to 63 percent. This would mean a 3 percent increase for employees. The focus is now on the release of the AICPI-IW data for June 2026 to ascertain the exact dearness allowance that central employees and pensioners will receive from July.

The Ministry of Labor and Employment has published the AICPI-IW index for May 2026, which was 150.8, showing a 0.9 point increase from April’s 149.9. This index is crucial for determining dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for government employees and pensioners, with the government reviewing DA biannually in January and July.

Dearness allowance increments occur twice a year
DA for central government employees is revised twice annually, on January 1st and July 1st. The January 1st DA increase is typically announced by the end of March, while historically, the announcement for the July DA increase is made in September or October, before the festivals. Irrespective of the announcement timing, the increase is considered effective from January 1st and July 1st. Employees receive the DA arrears along with the DA once the government announces the increase.
The government uses a round-figure value to determine the DA increase. This will be 63%. This means that the DA will increase by 3% from June 2026.
DA can only reach 64% if the 12-month average inflation reaches 148.86 after the June data is released. For this, the June AICPI-IW index data must be 154.5. However, this is not easy considering the pattern of the past 12 months. However, the actual DA increase will only be known after the government’s announcement.
