DA Hike: Central government employees and pensioners nationwide are eagerly anticipating the announcement regarding the dearness allowance (DA) increase for July 2026. A major concern for many employees is whether this DA hike will be based on the 7th Pay Commission or the upcoming 8th Pay Commission (8th Pay Commission News). Additionally, there is curiosity about the extent of the DA increase this July. With the latest inflation data, things are starting to look clearer…
What is the expected DA increase in July 2026?
As per the May 2026 CPI-IW (Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers) data released by the Labor Bureau, the index has gone up from 149.9 in April to 150.8. Based on the current inflation data, it is estimated that the dearness allowance (DA) could rise by around 3% starting July 2026. However, this figure is not yet confirmed. The final DA increase will only be established after the June 2026 CPI-IW data is published.

Will the July DA be calculated under the 7th Pay Commission or the 8th Pay Commission?
At present, the dearness allowance for July 2026 will be disbursed according to the existing 7th Pay Commission. This indicates that employees will receive the increased DA following the rules of the 7th Pay Commission. However, once the government introduces the 8th Pay Commission and the new salary structure is in place, any difference in DA based on the updated basic pay may be compensated to employees as arrears. This will hinge on the final recommendations and government approval.

How will the arrears be distributed after the 8th Pay Commission is implemented?
Reports suggest that the 8th Pay Commission might be put into effect by late 2027, with an expected effective date of January 1, 2026. As a result, employees could potentially receive arrears amounting to approximately 18 to 24 months. According to employee organizations, DA is typically reset to 0% upon the implementation of the new Pay Commission. After this, new DA is added every six months. Therefore, there will be no DA arrears from January to June 2026, but from July 2026, the difference between the DA received under the 7th Pay Commission and the DA calculated under the 8th Pay Commission may be paid later as arrears.
When can the increase in DA be announced?
Dearness Allowance is considered effective from January 1st and July 1st of each year. However, its official announcement is made a few months later. It is expected that the DA hike for July 2026 will be announced in October or around Diwali. If the increase is 3%, employees will receive the increased DA from the date of implementation, and the difference may be paid based on the revised salary after the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission.
By which formula will the DA for July 2026 be decided?
Dearness allowance is calculated based on the average CPI-IW of the previous 12 months. Data up to May 2026 has been released, and only data for June 2026 is pending. Based on this final data, the DA increase for July 2026 will be determined. Based on the currently available data, a DA increase of approximately 3% is anticipated.
How much was DA increased last time?
The central government had previously approved a 2% increase in dearness allowance, effective January 1, 2026. This increased the DA from 58% to 60%. This decision was approved by the Union Cabinet on April 18, benefiting more than 1 crore central government employees and pensioners.Currently, employees are eagerly awaiting the government’s next major decision. The government has yet to officially announce the implementation date of the 8th Pay Commission, the fitment factor, the new pay matrix, and the DA transition formula. Until further updates are received, the DA for July 2026 will likely be paid under the 7th Pay Commission. Later, upon the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, eligible employees may receive arrears based on the increased salary.
