DA Hike July: The upcoming dearness allowance (DA) hike is eagerly anticipated by central government employees and pensioners. The current DA stands at 60%, having been increased from 58% in January 2026. The next hike, expected in July 2026, has not been officially announced yet. It is speculated that the increase could be around 3 to 4% this time due to the rising All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) figures in recent months.
If the July announcement does not happen, history shows that the government often announces a DA increase around October. This year, employees and pensioners may receive this news before Diwali, possibly in October or November.

The importance of the DA increase lies in its impact on not only the current salary but also on pensions, gratuity, provident fund (PF), and various other allowances. Around 5 million central government employees and 6.5 million pensioners, including those from defense and railway sectors, are keenly awaiting this adjustment. The extent of the increase for each individual will vary based on their salary and pay level.
In addition to the DA hike, there is ongoing speculation about the 8th Pay Commission. While reports suggest that the Commission might present its recommendations by early or mid-2027, the implementation of these recommendations typically takes two to three years. Therefore, employees may fully benefit from the 8th Pay Commission by 2029 or 2030. For now, employees and pensioners are closely monitoring the June AICPI-IW data and awaiting the government’s next move.
The Ministry of Finance announced a 2% increase in dearness allowance (DA) for central government employees and pensioners in April 2026. This increase came into effect from January 1, 2026, increasing the DA from 58% to 60%.
50 lakh central employees and 65 lakh pensioners will benefit
DA is part of an employee’s basic salary, provided to mitigate the impact of rising inflation. This benefit is available only to central government employees and pensioners, not to private sector employees. Approximately 5 million central government employees and 6.5 million pensioners benefit from the DA increase, including current and retired employees of the defense and railways. However, salary increases vary according to each employee’s pay matrix level.
Why is there an expectation of 3% or 4% DA increase?
The Labor Bureau has released the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) for May 2026. In May, the index rose from 149.9 to 150.8, a 0.9 point increase. In April 2026, retail inflation was recorded at 3.48% and food inflation at 4.20%. These figures are also taken into account when determining DA.
