Dearness Allowance (DA) 2026: Millions of employees will get an increase of 3%?
There is good news for government employees. Expectations regarding Dearness Allowance have increased. Lakhs of central employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting to see how much the DA will increase this time. According to the latest data, the dearness allowance from July 2026 can increase by 3 percent.
If this happens, the current 60% DA will increase to 63%. But it all depends on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data for June 2026.
Actually, the method of DA calculation is completely based on the AICPI-IW index. The government reviews the dearness allowance in January and July every year. This time, AICPI-IW data for 12 months from July 2025 to June 2026 will be considered as the base period for the review to be held in July 2026.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment has already released the AICPI-IW Index for May 2026. It reached 150.8 in May, up 0.9 points from 149.9 in April. This data shows that inflationary pressure is increasing, and this will have a direct impact on DA.
All eyes are now on the AICPI-IW data for June 2026. If the index remains around 151 in June, the estimated DA will be around 63.7 per cent. Since the government implements dearness allowance in full digit, it can be increased to 63 per cent.
This means that central employees and pensioners will get a hike of 3 per cent from July. But it is too early to say anything officially as the final decision is not possible without the June data.
How much will the DA increase from July 2026? Decision rests on AICPI-IW index
DA calculation is a little complicated to understand, but we understand it in simple language. The DA that the government will fix for the period July-December 2026 is calculated on the basis of AICPI-IW data for 12 months from July 2025 to June 2026.
From this data, the average index is extracted and based on that, the percentage of DA is decided. The projections have accelerated after the AICPI-IW index of May 2026 came to 150.8. Experts believe that if the same trend continues in June, then the DA is set to increase by three percent.
If we look at the data of the Ministry of Labor, the AICPI-IW index in April 2026 was 149.9. It rose to 150.8 in May. That's a 0.9 -point increase in one month.
This increase is also important because it is clear that the prices of consumer goods are increasing. When inflation increases, DA is increased only to adjust it in the salary of government employees. That is why every time inflation increases, employees get the benefit of DA increase.
Talk about how DA is fixed, so a formula works in this. The government had decided the DA calculation formula after the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. Under this, the percentage of dearness allowance is calculated from the average of the AICPI-IW index.
If the index of June 2026 remains 151 or more, then the DA can reach around 63.7%, which the government can apply 63% in absolute numbers. However, this is all speculation at the moment. A clearer picture will emerge only after the June figures are out.
Dearness allowance increases twice a year, know when it is announced
The Dearness Allowance (DA) of central employees is increased twice a year. The first time from January 1 and the second time from July 1.
The government had announced the DA at the end of March 2026, to be implemented on January 1, 2026. At that time, the employees got a 3% increase in DA and it increased from 57% to 60%. Now it is expected that the DA, which will come into effect from July 1, 2026, can also be announced soon.
If we look at the records of the past years, we see a pattern. The government usually announces the DA in September or October, which comes into effect in July.
Why? Because it has been the priority of the government to give great good news to the employees before the festivals. However, this time it is expected that the announcement may be early as the data of AICPI-IW is being released on time and the government would also like to make it available to the employees as soon as possible.
One thing is special that the government may announce an increase in DA anytime, but it is always considered to be applicable from January 1 and July 1. That is, if the government announces the DA hike for July 2026 in September 2026, then the employees will get the arrears of July, August and September separately.
That's a big relief. This means that even if there is a delay in the announcement, the employees get their full right. The increase in dearness allowance directly benefits the salary, and it also affects the other allowances received in the future.
How much will DA increase? Experts "opinion
When DA is increased by 3%, it directly benefits the basic salary of the employees. Suppose an employee's basic salary is Rs 40,000 per month and he is getting 60% DA, then he is getting Rs 24,000 per month as dearness allowance.
Now if DA becomes 63%, then dearness allowance will be Rs 25,200. This means that you will get an extra Rs 1,200 every month. This translates to a benefit of around Rs 14,400 annually. Imagine, if someone's basic salary is high, the benefit will be equally high.
The big question is whether the government can increase DA by more than 3%? Experts have different opinions on this. Some analysts believe that if the AICPI-IW index of June 2026 reaches 152 or 153, the DA could be 64% or even 65%.
But most experts agree that an increase of 3% is the most likely, given the current data. However, it is also true that the final decision will be taken by the government and it has no right to increase or decrease it as it is formula-based.
Another important thing - when the DA crosses 60%, many other allowances also increase. For example, HRA (House Rent Allowance) and Transport Allowance also have an impact.
As per the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission, HRA increases when DA is more than 50%. At present, DA is at 60% and HRA can be increased further if it is 63%. However, this is a separate announcement. Overall, an increase in DA is a very good benefit to the overall salary package of the employees.
DA Arrears: Do you know when and how much it will be?
When the government announces the DA hike to be implemented in July 2026, the employees will also get three months' arrears. The arrears will be for July, August and September, even if the announcement is made in October. Usually, when the government announces a DA hike, it pays the arrears along with the salary for the same month.
Sometimes an arrear is also given separately. Employees should understand that arrears are their right, it is not a bonus.
How much arrears will be received depends on the basic salary of the employee. If an employee gets a basic salary of Rs 50,000 and gets a benefit of 3% i.e. Rs 1,500 per month in DA, then the three-month arrears will be Rs 4,500.
This amount will vary according to the salary category of the employee. However, there are some other factors also involved in the calculation of the arrears, but generally the same formula is applied.
It has been seen in the past years that the government has not created any complications regarding DA arrears. Whenever the announcement has been made, the arrears have been paid on time.
However, one piece of advice - employees should keep their salary slips and pay-scales accurate so that the arrears are received correctly and there is no discrepancy. If anyone finds any difference in the arrears, he can contact his finance department.
7th Pay Commission: What will change after DA hike?
At present, all central government employees are getting salaries and allowances as per the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. DA is decided under the same commission. When DA increases, it has an impact not only on salary but also on pension.
Pensioners also get the benefit in the form of Dearness Relief (DR). As the DA of the employees increases, the DR of the pensioners also increases. Another great thing about the 7th Pay Commission is that it has made the DA calculation transparent, giving employees confidence that there will be no injustice to them.
At present, there are about 47 lakh central government employees and over 65 lakh pensioners. Such a large number of people get the benefit of DA increase.
This means a huge financial burden on the government, but since it is a formula-based process, the government cannot avoid it. In the general budget 2026, the government has made adequate provisions for this, which makes it clear that there will be an increase in DA.
One more thing - some people think that inflation increases further by increasing DA, but this is a fallacy. The purpose of DA is to reduce the impact of inflation, not to increase it. When inflation increases, DA increases so that the purchasing power of the employees remains.
It's an attempt to strike a balance. Therefore, the DA hike should be seen in a positive light as it is in the interest of the employees.
DA Hike 2026: Expectations are based on data from June 2026
The AICPI-IW data for June 2026 is awaited. The Ministry of Labour and Employment releases this data between 20th and 25th of every month. The data for May 2026 came to 150.8.
It is expected that the data for June 2026 may also come by the end of this month. Once these figures come, there will be clarity in the DA calculation and the employees will know how much benefit they will get. By the way, if the current trend continues, a 3% increase can be considered almost certain.
If the index of June 2026 remains 151 or more, then the DA will reach 63.7% and the government can apply it 63% or 64%. Some experts also believe that if the index reaches around 152.5 in June, then the DA can be directly 64%. All of this, however, is speculation.
The actual figures will be known only after June-end. But right now estimates say a 3% increase is possible, which is good news.
One thing that people often forget is that DA is not just for central employees. State government employees are also linked to the DA of their respective states, although their calculation is different.
But the increase in central DA also puts pressure on the state governments to increase the DA of their employees. So, this is not only news for central employees, but it is also a sign for employees of other states that their DA can also be increased.
Can the government cut DA? Know the truth
This is a common question that often comes to the mind of employees. Can the government cut DA? Technically, DA is a formula-based allowance, and the government cannot reduce it at will.
However, there was a time during the COVID-19 pandemic when the government stopped the hike in DA, but that was also temporary. The government had later paid that withheld DA as arrears. So, generally it is safe to say that the government cannot cut DA, because it is linked with inflation.
However, some people worry that if inflation is low, then DA can also be reduced. But that happens very rarely. Usually, the DA either remains constant or increases. If inflation decreases, then the growth rate of DA may decrease, but it does not decrease.
This is an important point because employees are often confused about it. DA is not a constitutional right, but it is an important part of the salary, and the government does no injustice to it.
At present, there is no news of any reduction in DA. On the contrary, an increase of 3% is expected. Not only this, according to some sources, the government can also make some more relief announcements for the employees.
But for now, DA is the biggest good news. Wait for the data of June 2026, only then it will be finally known how much DA the employees will get from July.
