DA Hike: Big news for Employees. There’s significant news for Punjab government employees. The government has agreed to increase their DA by 8%. This will bring their total dearness allowance (DA) to 50%. This decision was made during a meeting between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and employee union leaders in Chandigarh on Friday.
The meeting decided that the 8% DA will be paid to employees in two installments, each of 4%. This decision is expected to result in an additional burden of approximately Rs 248 crore on the government treasury.
Aman Arora said that the meeting reached consensus on two key issues: first, the DA, and second, efforts to resolve disputes through dialogue. He added that several cases between the government and employees have reached the court. The government will move forward to resolve these issues through dialogue.
Discussion also on the pay scale of employees recruited in 2020
Employee unions have demanded that Punjab pay scales be extended to employees recruited on the central pay scale after July 17, 2020. The Chief Minister has vowed to investigate the matter.

The minister highlighted that the Chief Minister has genuinely heard and considered the employees’ concerns. Constructive discussions are now underway between the government and employee groups, with another important meeting scheduled with the Chief Minister in approximately two weeks. Additionally, there’s a commitment to reassess the salary structure for employees during their probation period, specifically the current Rs 17,000 and Rs 19,000 brackets.
Restoring the old pension system and addressing the Rs 200 tax
Employees have also pushed for bringing back the old pension scheme, which the government had previously committed to. While the government is currently reviewing this request, unions remain hopeful. Another key concern raised was eliminating the Rs 200 monthly professional tax that employees currently pay.
Support for temporary staff and teaching professionals
Unions advocated for temporary employees to receive their full salaries with all applicable allowances, rather than just basic pay. Computer teachers have also requested formal integration into their respective departments once they’re regularized. The government has acknowledged these concerns and indicated it will evaluate them carefully. Furthermore, the matter of mid-day meal workers’ compensation was discussed, with union leaders emphasizing that the current Rs 3,000 wage is insufficient. Encouragingly, the government responded positively to this concern as well.
Satish Rana, convener of the Sanjha Mulajim Front, said that the DA case is pending in court. The government has agreed to provide 8% DA, and employees will accept whatever the government provides. Cases related to the remaining demands will continue in court. According to union leaders, the next meeting with the Chief Minister is expected in the first week of October.
