Cyclone Murasu: Another disaster is coming. The effects of Cyclone ‘Arnab’ in Andhra Pradesh are still being felt, and now there’s the looming threat of another cyclone. A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is rapidly gaining strength. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that this system could develop into a cyclonic storm by Sunday. If it does, it will be called ‘Mursu’.
The Meteorological Department predicts that this storm may approach the Andhra Pradesh coast by the evening of Monday, November 2. As a result, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high sea waves are expected in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, a rain alert has been issued for several areas in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala. It’s important to note that the recent Cyclone Arnab caused significant damage in Andhra Pradesh, affecting thousands of people. The potential for another storm has raised concerns in the coastal areas.
How is Cyclone Mursu gaining strength?
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area has formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This system is expected to move west-northwest. The Meteorological Department indicates that it may strengthen further and evolve into a deep depression by Saturday evening. Following that, it is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm by Sunday. The Meteorological Department is actively monitoring its path and intensity.
India has designated the cyclone as ‘Mursu’
The name for this potential cyclonic storm forming in the Bay of Bengal will be ‘Mursu’, a name proposed by India. In Tamil, ‘Mursu’ translates to drum. Cyclonic storms are named based on a pre-established list, so if the current weather system becomes a cyclonic storm, it will officially be named ‘Mursu’.
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam in Puducherry. Apart from this, heavy rain is likely to occur in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till November 5. At the same time, rain may occur in Kerala and Mahe till November 4. This means that the impact of the possible cyclone ‘Mursu’ will not be limited to Andhra Pradesh only, but the weather in many states of South India may be affected.
Warning of high waves and strong winds at sea
IMD has predicted rough sea conditions in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph are likely to prevail in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema till November 1. Wind speed may reach 50 kmph at some places. In such a situation, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea and people living in coastal areas are advised to follow the instructions of the Meteorological Department.
