Credit Card Fraud: As digital payments rise, so does the reliance on cards for everyday expenses and the ease of obtaining instant online approvals. Unfortunately, digital fraud cases are also rising rapidly. If you have fallen victim to fraudsters or are worried about potential fraud, there is no need to panic; taking the right steps at the right time can help you save your money.
The RBI ensures full protection for customers against credit card fraud, provided you report the fraud promptly and meet the necessary conditions. Here is a simple guide to help you avoid falling victim to credit card fraud.
Block Your Card
Your first priority should be to prevent any further loss. As soon as you notice a suspicious transaction, block your card immediately. You can do this easily through the mobile app, net banking portal, or the 24-hour customer care helpline. This not only provides peace of mind but also prevents further unauthorised charges. It is also essential to check your credit card statements regularly.
Inform the Bank
Do not forget to notify your bank about any suspicious transaction. In most cases, the bank will ask you to fill out a dispute form. This form typically requires details such as the transaction amount, date, transaction ID, and a written statement. This confirms you did not authorise the payment and is a necessary step to start an investigation.
To strengthen your case, file complaints through all official channels, such as the bank’s customer care and the RBI’s Complaint Management System. Additionally, you can file a formal FIR at your nearest police station.
Save the Records
Preserve all information related to the fraud. This includes text alerts, transaction screenshots, a copy of the FIR, and any email correspondence with the bank. These records can support your claim and help recover your money under the bank’s terms and RBI regulations.
Follow-up is Essential
You must follow up with the bank after submitting all the documents. Monitor the chargeback timeline, check whether the amount has been reversed, and review your account statements carefully. Staying vigilant ensures that no new issues arise. Typically, banks investigate within 7 to 45 days after you file a complaint.
Is a Refund Guaranteed?
Please note that filing a complaint does not guarantee a refund. However, acting quickly increases the likelihood of a positive outcome. Credit card fraud can happen to anyone; therefore, both awareness and prompt action are crucial. To avoid this, stay updated on potential scams and adhere to basic security practices.
