Indian Passport Issues: Kunal Kushwaha, an Indian-origin tech professional residing in the United Kingdom, recently shared his frustration with the Indian passport on social media. In his post, Kunal wrote that the Indian passport no longer holds much value for him. He stated that while living abroad, he has faced numerous experiences that have left him mentally exhausted rather than simply angry.

Travel Troubles in Ireland and Berlin

Kunal recounted planning a trip to surprise a close friend in Ireland, but even this simple trip became entangled in bureaucratic hurdles. Instead of easily booking tickets, he had to repeatedly fill out information on the visa portal. He also shared that a recent trip to Berlin prevented him from meeting friends in Dublin for Christmas. The problem wasn’t a lack of money or time, but rather the limited time available for the visa process.

Airport Experiences and Visa Process

Kunal described his daily experiences at the airport, noting that while others easily pass through immigration, he has to stand in long lines with a file of documents. He likened the Schengen visa application process to a full-time job, requiring repeated submissions of bank statements, cover letters, bookings, and travel details.

Low Real Return on Investment

Along with passport-related difficulties, Kunal also expressed concern about the state of his investments in India. He stated that while investments in India appear attractive on paper, the declining value of the rupee has gradually reduced the real return. Even a good return doesn’t seem as profitable as expected.

India’s Position in the Henley Passport Index 2025

In the recently released Henley Passport Index 2025, India’s ranking has dropped to 85th place. Singapore holds the top spot, with its citizens able to travel to 195 countries without a visa. South Korea is in second place, with its citizens enjoying visa-free travel to 190 countries. Japan is in third place, with its citizens able to travel to 189 countries without a visa.

Concerns were also raised about environmental issues

Kunal also expressed his concern about the state of the Indian environment. He said that the poor air quality in the country is not only reflected in the statistics but can also be felt physically. Despite its impact being visible in global rankings, no significant improvement is being made.
