If you also avoid keeping cash and use the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) facility every day, then this news is important for you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is going to implement new rules related to UPI payments from August 1, 2025.
The purpose of these rules is to make the UPI system faster, safer, and more reliable than before. Let us explain these new rules in simple words.
New UPI Rules from 1st August
From 1st August 2025, new rules will be applied to UPI. These changes are made by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) to make UPI faster and reduce pressure on the system. Now, you can check your bank balance only 50 times a day on UPI apps. This is done to avoid extra load on the system.
You can also see which bank account is linked to your mobile number only 25 times in a day. Auto debit payments like Netflix, SIP, etc., will only happen at non-busy times — before 10 am, between 1 pm to 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm. Also, if your payment gets stuck, you can check its status only 3 times, with a gap of 90 seconds between each check.
Why These Rules Are Needed
UPI is used for more than 16 billion payments every month. In April and May, many people faced problems like slow speed or failed payments. Most of the problems happened because users were checking balance too often or refreshing stuck payments many times.
To improve this, NPCI made other changes too. In June 2025, UPI’s speed was improved. Now, payment requests are completed in 15 seconds, and failed payment checks in 10 seconds. From 30th June, you can also see the name of the person you are sending money to. This will stop many frauds.
In December 2024, a new rule was added for chargebacks. Now, a user can ask for a chargeback only 10 times in 30 days, and only 5 times with the same person or company. These new rules will help UPI work better, faster, and without errors for everyone.
