India is leading the world in digital payments, and now another big change may come soon. The need for a PIN in UPI transactions might end. Instead, biometric verification like fingerprint, face ID, and iris scan will be used to approve payments. NPCI is working on this new technology, and it may be launched for regular users in the future. This step will help users who find it hard to remember their UPI PIN or are less educated. It will also help stop fraud, as biometric payments are based on each person’s unique data.

How Will Biometric Payment Work?

As per Business Standard, in this new system, users will not need to enter a PIN for UPI payments. Instead, they can use their fingerprint, face scan, or eye scan to make payments. This will help people who forget their PIN or who do not know much about using digital tools.

The Payment Process May Work Like This:

  • After scanning the QR code, the option for biometric verification will appear instead of the PIN.
  • Payment will be confirmed automatically after checking your fingerprint or using your phone’s Face ID.
  • A direct link between Aadhaar and NPCI will make this process possible, keeping the transaction both safe and simple.

Talking About Safety and Security

Biometric-based payment is considered safe because it uses the user’s personal data (like fingerprints or face) to confirm the payment. This makes it almost impossible for someone else to use your account. However, some cyber experts say that there is a risk of biometric data leaks. To handle this, the government and NPCI are working on strong safety steps. All biometric data will be stored in encrypted form, and no one will be able to use it without the user’s permission.

A Boon for Less Educated and Elderly Users

This feature will be very helpful for rural users, elderly people, or those who cannot remember their PIN. They just have to place their finger on a scanner or show their face to the phone’s camera, and the payment will be done. In shops, markets, or villages where digital payments are not used much, biometric UPI payments can bring a big change.
