As easy and quick as sending money through UPI is these days, even a small mistake can prove costly. Typing the wrong UPI ID or hastily tapping on an unknown person’s name can result in your hard-earned money being transferred to someone else’s account. But did you know that even if a wrong transaction occurs, your money can be safely returned? According to the new banking regulations of 2026 and the NPCI’s strict guidelines, transaction reversal is possible if you take the right steps immediately.

Do these things first after a wrong transaction

As soon as you realize that money has gone to the wrong person, stop panicking and submit the transaction’s exact details. It’s essential to have these details, the most important of which is the Transaction ID or UTR Number. This is a 12-digit number used to track transactions.

Also, note the exact date and time of the transaction, the amount sent, and the incorrect UPI ID to which the money was sent. First, ensure that the money has actually been deducted, as sometimes the transaction is listed as “Pending,” and the money is automatically returned.

Process for filing a complaint with a UPI app

Your first step should be to file a complaint with the UPI app you used to send the money, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm. Go to the app’s Transaction History and select the incorrect transaction you want to reverse. You’ll find the option to “Help” or “Raise a Dispute.” Select the “Sent to wrong person” or “Incorrect UPI ID” option. This process records your complaint in the official records, which will be useful when dealing with the bank in the future.

The Best Way to Get a Refund

Simply filing a complaint on the app isn’t enough. You must immediately contact your bank’s home branch or customer care. Provide the bank with the UTR number and a screenshot of the transaction. The bank sends a ‘Reversal Request’ to the recipient’s bank on your behalf.

Remember, the bank cannot deduct money without the recipient’s permission, but it can issue a mandatory refund order through the recipient’s bank. Your chances of getting your money back are higher if you file a complaint within 48 hours of the transaction.

If you don’t receive a resolution from the bank or app, you can escalate the matter to a higher level. First, visit the NPCI Grievance Portal. Submit a complaint with all your details under the ‘UPI Dispute Redressal Mechanism’ on the National Payments Corporation of India’s website. If you still don’t receive a resolution within 30 days, you can directly contact the RBI’s Banking Ombudsman. This is a rigorous legal process that provides a definitive solution to your problem and holds banks accountable.

Refund Time

Refund time depends on the recipient’s cooperation. If the recipient agrees, the money is received within 3 to 7 working days. However, if the matter escalates, it may take 2 to 4 weeks or longer. To avoid such mistakes in the future, always verify the name, as the name appears on the screen as soon as you enter your UPI ID. Before sending large amounts, always check by sending โ‚น1, and scanning a QR code instead of manually typing is a more secure and reliable option.
