Aadhaar card is one of the most important identity cards for the citizens of India, but if it is misused, it can become a big threat. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently taken a very big step. UIDAI has deactivated about 1.17 crore Aadhaar cards, which belonged to those who have died. This step has been taken to maintain the accuracy and security of the database.
Why were Aadhaar cards closed

Actually, the government was worried that the Aadhaar cards of dead persons could be misused. For this reason, UIDAI sought data on those people who have died from the Registrar General of India. So far, about 1.55 crore death records have been provided from 24 states and union territories. After verifying these records, UIDAI has deactivated 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers. This means that now these Aadhaar cards will not be able to be used anywhere.
How to deactivate Aadhaar for death in the family
UIDAI has recently launched a new facility called ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’ on the ‘My Aadhaar’ portal. You can close the Aadhaar card of a deceased member in your family using this facility.
First of all, go to the My Aadhaar portal.
Choose the ‘Reporting of Death of a Family Member’ option.
Here, you have to provide the information of the deceased, their Aadhaar number, and most importantly, your relation to them and the death registration number.
After verification of the information and documents, UIDAI will close that Aadhaar number.

What is ‘Pilot Project’
Under this big step, UIDAI has also started a ‘Pilot Project’. Under this project, the authority is sharing the information of people above 100 years with the state governments. Its purpose is to find out whether those people are still alive or have died. This will make the database even more accurate. This facility will prove to be a milestone in preventing misuse of the Aadhaar card and maintaining its security.
