The government has provided significant relief to drivers traveling on national highways across the country without a FASTag. Until now, vehicles without a Fastag were charged double the toll. However, under the new system implemented from November 15th, if a driver pays using UPI, they will be charged only one and a quarter times the total amount, or up to 75% less. However, the double toll for cash payments will remain in effect.

Impact of the new system on the busy toll plazas on the Jhansi route
The Jhansi route, connecting Kanpur and Lalitpur, is considered extremely busy. There are five toll plazas on this route, including Vigha Maharra, Babina, At, Semri, and Aata, operated by the NHAI. Over 50,000 vehicles pass through these toll plazas daily. Most vehicles use Fastag, but some still operate without it, and were previously charged double the toll. With the new policy in place, those paying with UPI will no longer have to bear this additional burden.
Initiative to Prevent Cash Misappropriation and Promote Digital Payments
This government initiative aims to reduce cash transactions at toll plazas and promote digital payments. Under this initiative, barcoded billboards have been installed at each toll plaza, allowing drivers to make payments directly using UPI. This will save time and make the payment process more transparent.
Daily Traffic and Toll Status
Approximately 8,000 vehicles pass through Lalitpur every day.
Approximately 10,000 vehicles are recorded at the Babina toll.
Approximately 8,000 vehicles pass through the Semri toll every day.
Approximately 9,000 vehicles pass through the At toll, and approximately 11,000 vehicles pass through the Aata toll.
Based on these statistics, this system will prove to be a significant relief to a large number of travelers.
Annual Pass for Fastag Holders
NHAI has also introduced an annual pass for FASTag users. The price is ₹3,000, covering 200 trips. Of the approximately 50,000 vehicles passing through the five toll plazas in the Jhansi area, approximately 7,500 car drivers are taking advantage of this facility.
