On 19 May 2023, RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 banknotes from circulation. After this, they could be deposited or exchanged in all bank branches till 7 October 2023. Now this facility is available only at 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank of India. Also, these notes can be exchanged from post offices.
RBI said this on 2000 rupee note
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Thursday briefed the Parliament’s Standing Finance Committee on the status of the Indian economy and financial system. The issue of 2000 rupee notes was prominent in the RBI meeting. On this, Governor Malhotra clarified that even though 2000 rupee notes are no longer in circulation, they are still legally valid and RBI has not invalidated them.
According to RBI, despite global challenges, India’s economy remains strong and is performing well. Committee Chairman Bhartruhari Mahtab described the discussion as very fruitful and said that many important issues were discussed in it.
The issue of counterfeit notes was also raised in the meeting. A member said that recently a large number of fake Rs 500 notes have been caught. On this the RBI Governor acknowledged the concern and said that the government and the RBI are constantly monitoring this and taking necessary steps to stop the counterfeit notes.
Questions were also raised about cryptocurrency in the meeting. The Governor gave a brief information on its rules and current status. Finally, the committee decided to call the Governor again on 23 or 24 July, so that he can give special information on the review of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
