The Government of Rajasthan is providing special assistance to farmers to promote innovation and organic farming in the agriculture sector. In this direction, the Vermikhad Unit Scheme run by the Department of Agriculture is being considered highly beneficial for farmers. Under this scheme, farmers are given a subsidy of up to Rs. 50,000 for setting up vermicomposting units. Vermicomposting is considered the backbone of organic farming, and it helps make farming independent of chemical fertilizers.
What is Vermicompost and Why is it Important?
Vermicompost is a type of organic fertilizer created with the help of earthworms. The cellulose and microorganisms in the digestive system of earthworms break down organic matter quickly. As a result, the excrement produced by earthworms becomes high-quality vermicompost. This fertilizer improves soil fertility and enhances the quality of crops.
Key Features of the Scheme
Under the Vermikhad Unit Scheme of the Government of Rajasthan, farmers receive financial assistance to produce organic fertilizers. After constructing the vermikhad unit, it is physically inspected by a committee. Once the verification is complete, the subsidy amount is directly transferred to the farmer’s bank account. Since earthworms are essential for vermicompost production, their availability is a key factor in the scheme. This initiative helps farmers produce quality fertilizers at a low cost, boosting farm productivity and profitability.
