Poultry Farming Business: Life often takes a turn from where we least expect it. This is exactly what happened to Rashid Ali, a resident of Rampur. After working as an interior decorator in Goa for nearly 15 years, when he returned to his hometown, his biggest concern was starting a new business. But a friend’s advice changed his direction. Starting poultry on a small scale has now become a stable and profitable source of income for him.
Challenges at the Beginning
Rashid says that initially, he found poultry farming difficult and risky. Due to his lack of experience, he wasn’t sure if it was the right choice for him. But as he got to know the field more closely, he realized it wasn’t as difficult as it first appeared. Gradually, he learned the techniques, care, and management methods, and today, this business is generating a steady income of approximately 60,000-70,000 rupees per month.

A great start with little investment
The most important thing about this business is that it doesn’t require a lot of capital. Rashid is associated with a company that provides the entire setup and all the necessary materials. The company provides the chicks, feed, medicines, sends a doctor, and explains how to care for the chicks. Rashid’s job is simply to provide a shed, arrange for electricity and water, and take care of the chicks daily. Low investment and low risk make this business even more attractive.
How is the income generated?
Rashid is currently raising a batch of 2,650 chicks. These chicks are fully ready in 35 to 40 days. The company pays by weighing the chicks. The higher the weight, the more money is earned. FCR plays a crucial role in weight gain, which Rashid describes as the biggest advantage of this business.
Why is FCR Important?
FCR refers to how much feed a chicken consumes to gain one kilogram of weight. If chickens gain more weight with less feed, the farmer’s income increases. A low FCR means good growth with less expenditure. Rashid explains that if proper arrangements are made from the beginning, the FCR is very good, and the entire batch is profitable.
Techniques to Improve FCR
Rashid says that timely feeding, clean and fresh water, shed cleanliness, proper ventilation, and timely medication and vaccination are essential. Ensuring these ensures chicks gain weight quickly and reduces the risk of loss.

Chicken Mortality Record
An important part of this business is that if a chick becomes ill or dies, the company must be informed immediately. The more chicks survive, the more the batch will gain weight, and the farmer will earn more income. For this reason, Rashid thoroughly inspects the shed every day, both morning and evening.
Start This Business in a Limited Space
Rashid explains that the special feature of poultry farming is that it can be started even in small sheds. It’s crucial to keep the shed temperature between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius, especially in winter. Otherwise, the chicks begin to shiver from the cold and eat less. Rashid uses wood, straw, or lighted coal to maintain a balanced heat level in the shed, allowing the chickens to grow comfortably and gain better weight.
