Heavy rain hit Kolkata and many parts of South Bengal on Tuesday night. It caused big problems in daily life. Roads and low areas were flooded. Buses, taxis, and other public transport could not move. Waterlogging and overflowing drains disturbed many daily activities.

Because of this, the West Bengal government has started Durga Puja holidays for government schools and colleges two days earlier.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu said in a tweet, “A disaster-like situation is happening in the state. Following the Chief Minister’s advice, all schools and colleges will be closed on September 24 and 25. This will help students and prevent accidents.” Reports say the holiday may be extended to September 26 if the rain continues.

Schools and Colleges Closed

The Education Minister said on X that heavy rain has caused a disaster in the state. Following the Chief Minister’s advice, all schools and colleges will be closed on September 24 and 25. Teachers and education workers will do their important work from home.

Durga Puja holidays were to start on September 26, but now the holidays will start two days earlier. The Minister wished everyone a happy autumn and gave sympathy to the families of people who died in the rain.

Deaths and Problems

At least seven people died from electrocution in the city. Some areas got more than 330 mm of rain in a few hours, while most parts of the city and suburbs got more than 250 mm.

Heavy rain also affected air travel in Kolkata. At least 30 flights were cancelled, and many others were delayed.
