The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that even two years after the announcement of demonetization of Rs 2,000 notes, notes worth about Rs 5,956 crore are still with the people. When the announcement of withdrawal of these notes was made on 19 May 2023, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation in the market. That is, about 98.33 percent of the notes have been returned so far.
RBI has clarified that the 2,000 rupee note is still a valid currency, that is, its transaction is not invalid. These notes were issued after demonetization in November 2016. The service of exchanging these notes is available in 19 local offices of RBI. Also, from 9 October 2023, people and institutions can also deposit them in their bank accounts. Apart from this, common citizens can deposit Rs 2,000 notes in their bank account from any post office through Indian Postal Service.

People can still deposit Rs 2,000 notes in their bank accounts at 19 issue offices of RBI. This facility is continuing from 9 October 2023. Those who cannot go to the RBI office can send their Rs 2,000 notes to any RBI issue office in the country through Indian Post and get them deposited in the account.
