RBI Confirms: ₹2000 Notes Still Legal, But Most Banks May Refuse

Even though the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 notes two years ago, crores of notes are still in circulation. According to the latest data of the RBI, ₹6,017 crore ₹2000 notes are still present in the system. If you also have such notes and want to exchange them, then there is no need to worry. RBI has still kept the option of exchanging these notes open.

98.31% notes returned to the system

RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹ 2,000 notes from circulation on 19 May 2023. The total value of these notes on that day was ₹ 3.56 lakh crore. Now it has come down to just ₹ 6,017 crore, which means that about 98.31% of the notes have returned to the system.

Exchange notes at RBI offices

If you want to exchange your ₹ 2000 notes, you can directly go to 19 regional offices of the RBI and deposit them. This facility has been continuing since 9 October 2023. This facility is for those who do not have a bank account or who do not want to deposit notes in any bank. You can deposit these notes in your bank account or exchange them for cash (with some rules).

You can also exchange notes through the post

If you cannot go to the RBI office, there is another easy way. You can send your ₹ 2000 notes to any RBI office in the country through Indian Post and get them deposited in your bank account. You just have to pack the notes well and send them to the address of any regional office of the RBI. This is a very convenient option for those who live far from the RBI office.

This information is very important for those who still have ₹ 2000 notes. RBI has given enough time to withdraw these notes, and there are still options to exchange notes.
