Train Fare Hike: Major setback for railway passengers. Every day, millions of passengers travel by train from one city to another in the country. Railways are considered the common man’s lifeline. Now, important news has emerged for travelers. Indian Railways has made a major decision regarding train fares, which will directly impact long-distance travelers. The Railways has announced that the changes in train fares will be implemented effective December 26, 2025.

Following this decision, travel on many routes may become more expensive than before. However, it’s a welcome relief that, keeping short-distance travelers in mind, the Railways has decided not to increase fares for journeys up to 215 kilometers. This means that daily commuters won’t be affected for the time being. However, long-distance travelers may have to loosen their purse strings.

Fares have been increased for long distances

The Railways has announced a fare hike. This change will only apply to long-distance journeys of more than 215 kilometers. In the normal category, fares will now increase by 1 paisa per kilometer, while in the mail, express, and AC categories, the increase will be 2 paisa per kilometer. For example, for a journey of 1000 kilometers, the fare will be 1 paisa per kilometer.

Passengers traveling on a non-AC train on that route will have to pay approximately 10 rupees extra. Meanwhile, those traveling on premium trains like the Sampoorna Kranti Express, Vande Bharat, and Rajdhani Express will have to pay approximately 20 rupees more. Overall, the burden on passengers’ pockets isn’t significant. However, even a small increase will certainly impact their pockets.

These passengers will not have to pay extra fare

Along with the fare hike, the Railways has also provided relief to passengers. According to the new rules, no extra fare will be charged for those traveling up to 215 kilometers in the normal category. This will directly benefit daily train travelers and short-distance commuters. Those commuting between work, school, or smaller cities will not be impacted by this.

The Railways maintains that this decision was made with the general public in mind. They believe that a modest increase in fares for long-distance and premium fares will improve resources, while providing relief to short-distance passengers. Thus, an attempt has been made to maintain a balance in the fare increase.
