The 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana will be released on 2 August 2025. Just before this, the government shared important information in Parliament about ineligible farmers. Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ram Nath Thakur, told the Lok Sabha on Monday (29 July 2025) that so far, ₹416 crore has been recovered from ineligible farmers under the PM Kisan Yojana. The recovery process from such farmers is still going on.

When was the PM Kisan Yojana started?

The Central Government started the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme in February 2019 to give financial help to crores of poor farmers in the country. Under this scheme, poor and middle-class farmers get ₹6,000 every year. This money is sent directly to their bank accounts in three installments.

The government has kept full transparency in the registration and checking of farmers. Since the scheme started, the Government of India has given more than ₹3.69 lakh crore in 19 installments.

Farmers get the benefit of this scheme through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), based on verified data shared by the states and union territories on the PM-KISAN portal. However, some people took this money in the name of poor farmers even though they were not eligible. Now, the government is recovering this money from them.

The government has asked states and union territories to take back the money from those who are not eligible, like income tax payers, government workers, people working in public sector companies, and those holding high government posts. So far, ₹416 crore has been recovered from ineligible people.

Eligibility for PM-KISAN

The government has set some rules for this scheme. Farmers must link their Aadhaar card with their bank account and complete e-KYC. Land verification is also necessary.
