Petrol Diesel Supply Update: In recent days, rumors have been circulating quickly throughout the nation and on social media, suggesting that India is experiencing a significant shortage of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas (LPG) due to the global crisis and escalating crude oil prices. Reports of long lines at petrol stations and strict limitations have emerged from various locations.
Amidst this chatter and rising concern, the three major state-owned oil companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL)—have released a comprehensive joint statement. They have reassured the public that there is no fuel crisis. Let’s delve into what the oil companies are actually communicating and what the most recent market data indicates.
The companies assert that fuel supply is entirely normal, urging the public to ignore the rumors:
The three state-owned oil companies (OMCs) have firmly declared that the supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders throughout the nation is completely sufficient and well-managed. There is no fuel shortage anywhere in the country. They have urged the public to refrain from panic buying and to dismiss any unfounded rumors.
As per the latest figures released by the companies, petrol and diesel sales experienced an extraordinary spike in the first half of May 2026. Major states across the nation reported a substantial rise of 19% in petrol sales and 24.5% in diesel sales. For instance, in Jaipur and its neighboring areas, petrol demand surged by 18.4% and diesel demand by 21.3%. Nevertheless, HPCL has confirmed that its entire supply chain is operating continuously to meet this heightened demand.
What has caused the sudden rise in diesel demand across the country?
According to sources from the oil companies and industry analysts, the abrupt increase in diesel demand is not a result of a crisis, but is instead linked to the farming and harvesting season. During this period, diesel usage in tractors, combine harvesters, and agricultural machinery sees a significant uptick in rural and semi-urban regions.
Furthermore, the intense heat has also increased fuel consumption in the transportation sector.
Top officials of oil marketing companies (OMCs) have clarified that despite global tensions and the Hormuz crisis in West Asia, India’s supply of cheap Russian crude oil has not been affected. Officials reminded that India is a net exporter of petroleum products, meaning it refines more fuel than it needs and sells it abroad. Therefore, there is no scope for any fuel crisis in the domestic market.
Home delivery of LPG cooking gas will also remain uninterrupted
Along with petrol and diesel, companies have also clarified the situation regarding domestic and commercial LPG cylinders. Indian Oil (Indane), Bharat Gas, and HP Gas bottling plants are operating at full capacity. Dealers have adequate stock, and there will be no delays in booking and home delivery of cooking gas in any state or city across the country. Consumers can book their cylinders as easily as before.
