Passport Renewal Process: A passport is an official identification card, considered mandatory for international travel. For those traveling abroad for travel, study, or employment, it is one of the most important documents. However, many people forget that passports also have a fixed validity period and must be renewed on time.
What is Passport Validity?
A standard passport issued in India is valid for 10 years. After the expiry date, the passport becomes invalid, so it is essential to renew it before it expires. Experts recommend starting the renewal process approximately 9 months before the passport expires to avoid any travel problems.
What are the rules for those under 18?
If the passport holder is under 18, the passport is only valid for 5 years. After that, the passport must be renewed again. The good news is that the passport renewal process is completely simple and online.
Documents Required for Passport Renewal
A current, valid passport is essential for passport renewal. Along with this, a photocopy of the first and last pages of the passport, a self-attested copy of the ECR or non-ECR page, proof of current address, the validity extension page, and a self-attested copy of any observations recorded in the passport, if any, must be submitted.
Passport Renewal Fees
The fee for renewing a 36-page passport with a 10-year validity period is ₹1,500 for the standard service, while the fee for the Tatkal service is ₹2,000. The fee for a 60-page passport is ₹2,000. For children under 18, the fee for a 5-year validity passport is ₹1,000. This amount increases with the Tatkal service.
