The PAN number is based on the personal information given by you. It is not just a set of random numbers, but each of its letters and digits has a special meaning.

The first three digits of the PAN number are English letters. It can be anything between AAA to ZZZ. These letters are allotted as a series by the Income Tax Department.

The fourth letter indicates the tax category of the cardholder. For example, if an individual is a cardholder, he is represented by the letter ‘P’ (Person). Apart from this, a company is represented by the letter ‘C’ (Company), a trust by ‘T’ (Trust), a firm by ‘F’ (Firm), and a Hindu Undivided Family by ‘H’ (Hindu Undivided Family – HUF).

The fifth letter is the first letter of your surname. For example, if someone’s surname is Sharma, the fifth letter will be written as ‘S’. This is for a personal PAN card.

The next four digits are numerical, which can be anything from 0001 to 9999. These are allotted serially by the Income Tax Department.

The last character of the PAN card is an English letter, which is used as a check digit. It is calculated based on the combination of previous letters and digits to prevent any error or fraud.
