Now onions will be available in these cities for ₹ 24 per kg

The central government has started this scheme in Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. In these cities, onions are being sold through mobile vans through cooperatives like Nafed, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar. From Friday, this sale will also be extended to Chennai, Guwahati, and Kolkata, and it will continue till December. The government currently has a buffer stock of 3 lakh tonnes, which was purchased at an average price of ₹ 15 per kg. This stock is being used to keep prices stable.

Why was this decision taken

Food Minister Prahlad Joshi said that the government’s priority is to control food inflation. Common people can be given relief only by controlling the prices of essential commodities like onions. Inflation has come down in the last few months, a major reason for which has been the control of food prices. The government is monitoring the daily prices of 38 commodities from 574 centers across the country.

Bumper yield expected this year

This year, onion production in the country is estimated to be 307.71 lakh tonnes, which is about 27% more than last year. The government has not imposed any tariff or ban on onion exports, and the pace of exports also remains stable. 1.06 lakh tonnes and 1.09 lakh tonnes of onion were exported in July and August 2025, respectively. The government believes that this initiative will not only stabilize domestic prices, but farmers will also get a fair price for their crop.
