Great news for crores of ration card holders in the country! The central government is reportedly going to make major changes in the ration system. This new rule is coming especially for the beneficiaries of the ‘Antyodaya Anna Yojana’. It is learned that the government is taking this step to eliminate the inequality that exists in the distribution of food grains. As a result, this could be a historic change for those who were not getting the right amount of ration till now.

Center’s big decision on ration

Currently, families holding Antyodaya ration cards are given a fixed 35 kg of food grains per family, regardless of the number of family members. That is, whether it is a small family of two members or a large family of seven members – the same amount of food grains for everyone.

As a result, on the one hand, families with fewer members have excess food grains stored compared to their needs, while on the other hand, it becomes insufficient for large families. To address this disparity, the central government has taken the initiative to bring new rules under the National Food Security Act, so that the distribution of food grains is more equitable and needs-based.

Each person will get 7.5 kg of food grains

According to a report by the Union Food Ministry, now food grains will be distributed to ‘per person’ instead of ‘per family’. According to the new proposal, each member of the Antyodaya Yojana will get 7.5 kg of food grains. This will be more than the amount of food grains that ordinary ration card holders (5 kg) get. This new system is likely to be implemented across the country by next year, i.e. March 2026.

If this new rule comes into effect, there will be a big change in the lives of about 1.71 crore Antyodaya ration card holders in the country. According to sources, families with four or less members will no longer get 35 kg of food grains as at present – their entitlement will be slightly reduced. On the other hand, families with five or more members will be given more food grains under the new rules. The government claims that this step will not only save food grains, but also help in reaching the needy more effectively.
