How many lakhs of rupees is the insurance cover available on a gas connection?
Upon purchasing an LPG connection or renewing an existing one, customers automatically receive a fixed insurance cover. There is no need to fill out a separate form or pay any additional premium. This insurance, offered by companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas, compensates for losses caused by accidents such as gas leaks, fires, or cylinder explosions. Consumers receive accidental cover of up to Rs. 50 lakhs, with each family member receiving a benefit of approximately Rs. 10 lakh.
The maximum family cover limit is ₹50 lakh. Property damage due to an accident is compensated up to ₹2 lakh, while personal accident cover of up to ₹6 lakh is provided in case of death. Medical coverage of up to ₹30 lakh is provided for treatment, which is equivalent to ₹2 lakh per member. This entire amount is disbursed directly to the family, but the cylinder, regulator, pipe, and stove must be ISI-marked and have undergone periodic checkups.
What conditions must be met to receive insurance benefits?
LPG insurance benefits are available only if consumers strictly follow safety rules. Gas pipes, stoves, and regulators must always be ISI-marked. There should be no exposed electrical wires in the gas consumption area. In case of an accident, it is mandatory to inform the distributor and the nearest police station within 30 days. A copy of the FIR, hospital records, medical bills, and, in the case of death, a post-mortem report are required for claims. This cover is available only to the consumer in whose name the connection is held, as the option to add a nominee is not available under this facility.

How to File an Insurance Claim
If an accident occurs due to a gas leak or cylinder explosion and the consumer wishes to file a claim, the LPG distributor and the police station must first be informed. An insurance company official then inspects the site. If the report is found to be accurate, the insurance company approves the claim. The consumer does not need to submit a separate application for this process, as the distributor handles the claim process. Additionally, claims can also be filed online by visiting the mylpg.in the portal.
