Passport Update: Losing your passport in a foreign country can be one of the most stressful situations for any Indian traveler. When this happens unexpectedly while you’re far from home, it can be difficult to know what to do next. However, there’s no need to panic. Indian embassies and consulates are fully prepared for such emergencies. The most important thing is to remain calm and take the appropriate steps immediately.

Start with a Police Report

The first and most crucial step after losing your passport is to report it to the local police in the area where it was lost. The police report will serve as an official document and is necessary for all subsequent procedures. Next, immediately inform the nearest Indian embassy or consulate. The embassy will verify your nationality and identity and guide you through the process.

What is an Emergency Certificate?

If it is necessary to return to India immediately due to a serious reason, such as illness or a death in the family, the embassy can issue an Emergency Certificate (EC). This only allows you to travel back to India and cannot be used for further international travel. An EC is issued only after the traveler’s identity and nationality have been verified.

How to Obtain a New Passport

If you are not returning to India immediately and wish to continue your travels, you can apply for a new passport. A duplicate of the lost passport is not issued; instead, you will receive a new passport with a new validity period and a new number. For this, the embassy may request supporting documents such as your Aadhaar card, previous travel records, or a photocopy of your lost passport. Even if these documents are not available, a new passport can still be issued after verification of your details.

What to Do After Returning to India

After returning to India with an EC, obtaining a new passport is easier. Proof of address and date of birth, the police report, and an affidavit regarding the lost passport are required. If some pages of the old passport are still available, copies of those pages should also be submitted with the application.

Preventing Passport Misuse

It is important to report a lost passport immediately to prevent its misuse. Before traveling, keep a digital copy of your passport safe on your mobile phone or email. This proves very helpful in obtaining a new passport or emergency certificate.
