Government Assistance for the Elderly, Old Age Pension to be Credited Directly to Bank Accounts

Adarsh P January 26, 2026

Old Age Pension Update: Individuals who have crossed the age of 60 are considered senior citizens. At this age, sources of income become limited, and therefore, the government runs an old-age pension scheme to provide financial support to the elderly. Under this scheme, eligible senior citizens receive a pension of Rs. 600 every month, which is directly deposited into their bank accounts. This amount aims to enable the elderly to meet their basic needs and not be dependent on others.

Who can avail of the scheme?

This scheme benefits elderly individuals who are economically weaker. This includes those who fall under the BPL (Below Poverty Line) category, those who have no children, or those living in helpless circumstances. However, individuals who are already receiving benefits from any other government pension scheme or who are income tax payers are not considered eligible for this scheme.

Documents required for the application

When applying for the old-age pension, it is mandatory to have an Aadhaar card, Samagra ID, and a bank account. Furthermore, it is essential that the e-KYC for both Aadhaar and Samagra ID is completed so that the pension amount can be directly transferred to the account.

Where and how to apply

Applications for the Senior Citizen Pension Scheme can be submitted both online and offline. Senior citizens can apply through the Senior Citizen Pension Portal. The facility to apply is also available through Common Service Centers (CSCs). If someone does not wish to use the online process, they can submit their application to the Municipal Corporation, Municipality, Janpad Panchayat, or the secretary of their Gram Panchayat. After the application is submitted, the Social Justice Department verifies the eligibility, and upon approval, the pension is started.

How is the pension amount disbursed?

Under the scheme, the pension amount is sent directly to the beneficiary’s bank account every month through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). In Madhya Pradesh, a large number of elderly people are benefiting from this scheme. In Sagar district alone, more than 80,000 senior citizens are receiving this pension every month.
