ITR Filing Deadline: Good news for taxpayers. Those who have not yet filed their income tax returns need not worry, CBDT has extended the last date for filing returns, now instead of 31st October, they can file their income tax returns till 10th December, CBDT has issued orders to this effect.
Income tax return can be filed till December 10
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for furnishing of income tax return under sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act for the assessment year 2025-26 from October 31, 2025 to December 10, 2025. The last date for filing audit report is now November 10. The due date for furnishing the report of audit for the previous year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) under the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961 which was originally due on September 30, 2025, was extended to October 31, 2025, but now the Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended it to November 10, 2025.
“The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the last date for filing of Income Tax Returns for the Assessment Year 2025-26, which is October 31, 2025, to December 10, 2025,” the CBDT said in a statement. According to tax laws, the last date for filing ITR for those who need to get their accounts audited, such as companies, proprietorships, and partnership firms, is October 31.
For general taxpayers and HUFs, the deadline is July 31. On September 25, the Income Tax Department had extended the deadline for submitting audit reports for the financial year 2024-25 by one month to October 31. This has now been extended to November 10. Several organizations across the country had demanded the dates be postponed, citing the disruptions caused by floods and natural disasters in some parts of the country, which had disrupted normal business and commercial activities.
The government had previously extended the deadline for filing ITRs for the assessment year 2025-26 from July 31 to September 15 and then to September 16. More than 75.4 million ITRs were filed by September 16. Of these, 12.8 million taxpayers paid self-assessment tax by September 16.
