ITR Filing Date Extended: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on May 27, 2025, extended the last date for filing ITR from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025. The Income Tax Department informed about this decision through a post on social media (earlier Twitter). This decision is a big relief for all those taxpayers who need additional time to understand the new ITR forms and adjust the TDS credit. Let us understand in detail the reasons behind this extension and its impacts on taxpayers.

Why the ‘deadline’ for ITR filing was extended

The Income Tax Department stated in its post that this extension has been given due to major changes made in the ITR forms. Also, additional time is required to update the system and complete the technical work related to the reflection of TDS credit.

The department said, “This extension will give taxpayers the necessary time to understand the changes in the ITR forms, system development, and proper reflection of TDS credits. This will ensure a smooth and accurate return filing experience for all taxpayers.” A formal notification will be issued soon in this regard. This shows that the government wants to help taxpayers file returns with correct information and without any haste.

There have been many important changes in ITR forms

CBDT said that changes have been made at the structural and content level in the new ITR forms issued for the assessment year 2025-26. These changes aim to simplify the process of filing taxes, increase transparency, and ensure correct information. Due to these changes, the development, integration, and testing of the tools of the ITR system is taking time.

Moreover, credits from TDS statements filed till May 31, 2025, will start showing up in early June. Because of this, if the extension was not granted in time, the window for filing returns would have been very short.

CBDT said in its statement that the purpose of this extension is to provide better convenience to taxpayers and help them file accurate returns without any haste with forms, data, and credits! This is a welcome step that will reduce the burden on taxpayers.

Taxpayers will get big relief

If you are also preparing to file your ITR and were earlier worried about the deadline of July 31st, then this announcement is a big relief for you. Now you will get time till September 15, 2025, to file your return. So you can file tax returns by understanding the new ITR forms thoroughly and with the correct information.
