8th Pay Commission Update 2026: The 8th Pay Commission for central employees and pensioners is now making headway. Amid prolonged speculation regarding the committee’s composition and functioning, the government has accelerated its preparations, allocating an official office to the Commission in the Chandralok Building on Janpath in New Delhi.
Currently, a notification has been issued for the process of appointing employees through deputation, a clear indication that the work on pay and pension revision has now moved from the files and formally begun.
Timeline and Report Submission Deadline

According to information shared by the government, the formation of the 8th Pay Commission was notified through a resolution dated November 3, 2025. As per the rules, the Commission has been given 18 months from the date of notification to submit its recommendations, meaning that the Commission will be able to submit its detailed report to the government by mid-May 2027.
Although nearly three months have passed since the Commission’s formation, it now has only 15 months left to complete its work. Employees will have to wait at least another year and a half to see actual changes in their payslips, as even after the report is submitted, the process of Cabinet approval and implementation takes time.
Bharat Bandh-like strike on February 12th
Even though the Commission’s office has resumed work, there is widespread anger among employee organizations due to the lack of any interim relief or financial provisions announced in Budget 2026 regarding the 8th Pay Commission. This anger has led to the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers (CGOE) announcing a one-day nationwide strike on February 12th, 2026.
The employee organizations’ main demand is that instead of delaying the long process of the Pay Commission, the government should immediately provide them with interim relief and take immediate action on demands such as merging 50 percent dearness allowance into the basic salary.

Decisive Meeting and the Fitment Factor
The upcoming date of February 25th will be extremely important for central employees, as a major meeting of the National Council of Staff Side (JCM) will be held on this day. The main objective of this meeting is to finalize the memorandum to be presented to the 8th Pay Commission.
In this document, employee organizations will strongly present their views on the proposed pay hike model, increasing the fitment factor and revising allowances, as well as on pressing issues such as the old pension scheme. This meeting will determine the level of pressure employees can exert to have their demands included in the Commission’s recommendations.
